The most common instrument used by Muslim Calligraphers is a Reed or Bamboo Pen popularly known as "Qalam". The dried reed or bamboo stem is treated and especially carved to hold ink of various colors. The ink is chosen in such that its intensity can greatly vary, so that the greater strokes of the composition can be quite dynamic in their effect.
